Fulper Pottery of New Jersey began in 1860, but did not create art pottery until 1900 under the guidance of the grandson of Abram Fulper, the founder. In the World's Fair of 1904, some of Fulper's work was given a prize for design.
In 1910, Johann Martin Stangl, a glazing expert, started working at Fulper. Stangl became president in 1926, and changed the company name to Stangl Pottery in 1929. Stangl acquired the firm in 1930. Judging by the glaze on this ceramic, I would suggest that this was produced prior to 1900 at a time when Fulper was interested in the Chinese/Japanese glazes, and before Stangl came to work for the firm. Beautiful Stangl Pottery Plate measure about 11 inches across. Beautiful draftsmanship. Stangl Potterty closed their operation in the 60's.
In 1942 Stangl made a radical move to be different, and tested a hand-carved, hand-painted pottery style based upon the pottery of the Pennsylvania Dutch. This pottery style involved taking a red body and covering it with a white englobe (a thin layer of a liquid white clay) that would then be allowed to partially dry. The thin white englobe would then be carved to allow the red body to show through. The piece would be fired to harden the clay, then painted, glazed, and refired. It was a time consuming, laborious process but also a very distinctive process. This hand-carved, hand-painted style of pottery would dominate Stangl's dinnerware lines up until the mid 1960's. At that time Stangl made a concerted effort to reduce the amount of carving being done. Many lines were introduced that required little carving (for instance the border only - Golden Blossom, Apple Delight) or required no carving at all (Orchard Song, Piecrust). The glory days of Stangl's hand-carved, hand-painted dinnerware lines were effectively ending. Limited amounts of the hand carved lines would continue to be made until 1974 when the red body was completely discontinued.

A lovely Roseville Planter in the Gardenia pattern c1940s. It is marked (in relief) Roseville U.S.A 630 - 12" on the base, and the colours go from a light pea green to a light amber color with green leaves and white gardenias. It is in excellent condition - no chips, cracks, staining or restoration of any type, just a some lines of crazing. It measures 13" x 6" x 5 3/4". Shipping is $20 to the US (other spots may vary) - insured is higher.
